Artist Bio - Julie Fickel

Let us introduce you to Julie Fickel. UK born, Australian resident of 30 years, now living in The Snowy Monaro.

Her story reflects incredible resilience, and an unwavering spirit in pursuit of health and wellbeing through creative expression.

Since childhood, Julie loved drawing & painting and dreamed of a future in art & design. However, as her life unfolded, artistic pursuits were set aside, to follow her passion to help and care for the most vulnerable of our community as a midwife. She raised a young family to adulthood in SE Queensland.

Adversity struck when Julie was diagnosed with breast, then throat cancer and spent 6 years relentlessly fighting for her life. Months of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation left her with no feeling in her fingers; severely affecting her fine motor skills, memory and confidence.

In the midst of treatment her artistic son, Arion, bought her a drawing journal & some soft pastel crayons, and sat with her for hours while she moved in and out of medicated delirium, and became so frail, she could not lift a glass to drink.

The journal and colour pastels proved to be an amazing gift, as she wrote, doodled, coloured and smudged her way through a slow recovery and her health & capacity improved.

In 2019 Julie had a near fatal car accident when a man T-boned her car, leaving her and her teenage son with head and spine injuries.

She felt strongly that the accident was a wake -up call and an opportunity to not only change direction, but to seize life fully & prioritise her passion, joy & creativity. She left nursing to follow her art. She moved from Queensland with her husband to Snowy Monaro for a mountain change to prioritise their creative pursuits and say YES to life.

Julie found her synergy with acrylic paint, loving the vibrant hues and versatility, allowing her to unleash her creativity on large canvases, breathing life into her quirky artwork. Each stroke of her brush speaks to her resilience, triumph over adversity & encapsulates her indomitable spirit.

Julies artwork is a testimony to her unwavering passion for life and her new found sense of direction; taking bold steps. Her colourful creations burst with vibrant energy, mirroring the kaleidoscope of experiences and emotions that have bought her to this point.

We invite you to let yourself be inspired by the transformative power of art as shared on these canvases, by this bold and resilient artist, Julie.
