Artist Bio - Murray Camens

Murray graduated as a Product Designer with UniSA, Adelaide, in 1977 and then spent the next 40 years living and working his way around the world.

He has lived in London, Netherlands, Singapore, Hong Kong and Seattle but now calls Victor Harbor home, except in the winter months, when he and his wife return to their apartment in Amsterdam.
As a designer for Philips, Murray created over 120 products that went into production. Each design started with a sketch before being converted to a technical drawing that was handed over to the engineers to finalise the design for production.
Drawing for a living, has been at the core of Murray’s career as a designer.
Murray moved on from designing to managing large teams of designers, scattered around the world, as global Head of Operations at Philips Design before joining the global design consultancy TEAGUE, as Vice President and Head of the Aviation Design Studio, based in Seattle. Murray was responsible for guiding TEAGUE’s long-standing design relationship with The Boeing Company, a role he held until 2017.
During his career, Murray has been named inventor on 16 United States patents and was the recipient of numerous design awards in the United States, Europe and Asia.
Among other things, he co-designed the Roller Radio in 1983, which was heralded as one of 80 design icons in the book ‘Past Tense, Future Sense’.
In 2018, Murray joined Monash University’s Healthcare Design Research lab, within the faculty of Art Design & Architecture, that connects academia with industry to create meaningful innovation and business development solutions.
Returning to his passion of drawing and painting as a hobby, keeps Murray busy in his (limited) spare time.
