Artist Bio - Jessica Curry

I am an Australian wildlife artist based in the Hunter Valley. I love painting detailed birds, animals and flowers. I am fascinated with the spectacular beauty that surrounds us everyday. My favourite mediums to paint in are watercolours and soft pastels.

I have only been an artist for around four years, I have always had a love of art and an appreciation for art but never considered that I might possibly have the talent to try. My Nan is an Artist so I have always been surrounded by art and have always appreciated the beauty that surrounds us. One day, out of the blue I decided to try to learn, I started teaching myself through art books, and youtube videos, and I became hooked. I decided that it didn't matter if I was the worst artist in the world, I found my passion for creating art and I would paint for me, for the joy of creating art. Since then I have taken some online paid courses and I continue to devour art books and youtube videos as well as discovering through trial and error my own styles and methods. I first started in coloured pencils for about 6 months, then moved on to watercolour painting in which I found a love of the fluidy of paint, and have been painting ever since. After a shoulder injury in November 2016 I was devasted that I was unable to paint watercolours as I had limited movement in the shoulder of my painting arm, so in a desperate bid to keep creating art I turned to soft pastel and discovered a wonderous passion for pastel. I truly adore them, I love the softness, the ability to create depth through layering, the quickness of the medium and the ability to achieve minute details or to suggest soft out of focus suggestions. I am still trying to improve my shoulder and am hoping one day soon I can return to watercolours but I adore soft pastel and I will always have a passion for creating in these mediums, I have also returned to creating in coloured pencils and I love this medium as well. As long as I am creating I am happy. I have found it is a wonderful way to cope with long term health issues, creating art helps me tune out the pain, and gives me a sense of self worth.
