A Bayside Icon

Description : A BAYSIDE ICON is a stylised representation of the distinctive circular building nestled within the Bayside Arts and Culture precinct and surrounding gardens. This iconic building houses the Bayside Council Chambers and Brighton Library and was completed in 1961, having been designed by architect Kevin Knight. The interior of the circular foyer and two circular meeting rooms were designed by Grant Featherston and are an example of late 1950s interior design in Victoria. The circular foyer is now occupied by the Brighton Library. The building itself is of architectural importance as an expression of the influence in Australia of the work of renowned American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The structure, with its prominent curved and tapering 'drum' form, recalls Wright’s design for the Guggenheim Museum in New York, which successfully combines curved and planar forms and integrates landscaping into the building’s fabric through the use of planter retaining walls. The painting ‘A Bayside Icon’ reflects the unique character of this Brighton landmark and its beautiful leafy surrounds.

In the 1970’s I studied painting, photography and ceramics at Monash University (Monash campus), graduating in Fine Art & Design, followed by a Diploma of Education from Melbourne University.  Between travels in Europe, Japan and the US through the 1980's and '90's I worked in retail management while creating much of the artwork and merchandise for sale at the family's art and craft gallery in Brighton. In 1998 I went on to establish Articall Art & Framing Gallery in New Street Brighton. My roles as owner/operator of Articall from 1998 to 2014 encompassed business management, art consultancy, picture framing, interior decorating, and conducting art classes for groups of all ages & experience. In 2014, after 16 years of operating from a retail space in Brighton, Articall had transitioned to trade solely as an On-line Gallery at change was to enable me to focus more on developing my own art practice, in addition to conducting weekly art workshops. Themes explored in my paintings range from urban landscapes to pure abstraction.
